Prasco Expands Ohio Pharmaceutical Cold Chain with 130,000-Square-Foot Carey Facility

Qué pasó
Prasco has acquired a pharmaceutical distribution facility covering more than 130,000 square feet in Carey, Ohio, expanding the company’s cold-chain, automation and secure-storage capabilities.
The facility includes temperature-controlled pharmaceutical handling, automated operating capabilities, inventory-management infrastructure and dedicated secure areas for controlled substances, including a vault and cage. It will complement Prasco’s existing operations in Mason, Ohio, rather than replacing that location.
Prasco announced the acquisition on August 31, 2026. The company said the additional site will strengthen operational redundancy and business continuity across its Ohio campuses while supporting specialized handling and faster pharmaceutical fulfillment.
The Carey facility is located within the Midwest pharmaceutical and logistics corridor, with access to major interstate highways and proximity to customers, contract development and manufacturing organizations, national distribution centers and health systems. Prasco works with more than 65 global brand partners and says its products reach more than 70,000 pharmacies across the United States.
The published announcement does not specify the transaction price, number of pallet positions, exact refrigerated temperature ranges or detailed automation architecture. Those capabilities should therefore be evaluated through facility-specific qualification documents rather than inferred from the building’s size.
Cómo funciona
A pharmaceutical distribution center must control more than inventory movement.
Products may require different combinations of temperature control, physical security, access restrictions, lot traceability and regulatory documentation. The Carey facility brings several of these controls into one operating environment.
Temperature-controlled handling protects products that cannot remain indefinitely under ordinary ambient warehouse conditions. Depending on the pharmaceutical portfolio, this may involve refrigerated, controlled-room-temperature or other qualified storage zones.
Prasco has not publicly identified the specific temperature bands supported at Carey. Pharmaceutical customers should therefore confirm which products, storage profiles and handling configurations are included within the site’s qualified scope.
A compliant temperature-controlled area normally requires:
- Mapeo de temperatura cargado
- Calibrated monitoring devices
- Defined alarm thresholds
- Backup power or contingency capacity
- Documented temperature-excursion procedures
- Mantenimiento preventivo
- Controlled receiving and dispatch processes
The building’s secure-storage infrastructure addresses a separate risk.
Controlled substances require stronger access, custody and inventory controls than ordinary pharmaceutical products. A vault and secured cage can restrict physical entry, while electronic inventory systems can record receipts, transferencias internas, picking and outbound release.
Thermal control and security must remain connected. A product cannot be considered properly managed if its temperature record is complete but its custody history is uncertain, or if it is physically secure but stored outside its approved conditions.
Automation can improve this connection by reducing manual transactions and linking each product movement with a system record. Depending on the installed configuration, automation may support receiving, inventory put-away, order picking, verification or outbound preparation.
Sin embargo, automation must be validated within the pharmaceutical quality system. The system should confirm that the correct product, lote, quantity and storage condition are assigned to the correct customer order.
Exception handling is particularly important. If a barcode cannot be read, an automated device becomes unavailable or inventory cannot be reconciled, staff need a controlled manual procedure that preserves product identity and prevents unauthorized release.
The second Ohio campus also gives Prasco another form of protection: geographic and operational redundancy.
If one site experiences a refrigeration problem, interrupción de energía, weather event, cyber incident or building-access restriction, selected operations may potentially be supported from the other location. The practical benefit will depend on how inventory, sistemas, staff and transportation lanes are divided between Carey and Mason.
True redundancy requires more than owning two buildings. The company must determine which products are duplicated between sites, whether both facilities use compatible systems, how quickly orders can be redirected and what documentation is required when inventory is transferred.
Por que importa
Pharmaceutical commercialization depends on reliable distribution after manufacturing is complete.
A medicine may be fully approved and available at the manufacturer, but patients cannot access it unless the product can be received, almacenado, picked and delivered through an appropriate distribution network.
This is particularly important for authorized generics and branded pharmaceutical products serving nationwide pharmacy networks. Order volumes can change rapidly after a product launch, market transition or supply disruption.
Additional distribution capacity can give Prasco more flexibility to manage these changes. The Carey site adds physical space, personal capacitado, cold-chain capability and secure handling without requiring all pharmaceutical inventory and fulfillment activity to depend on one campus.
The acquisition also reflects the increasing specialization of pharmaceutical warehousing.
An ordinary distribution building may provide suitable loading docks and storage area, but it may not have qualified temperature zones, controlled-substance security, validated monitoring or personnel trained in pharmaceutical procedures.
Converting an ambient warehouse into a pharmaceutical distribution center can require significant investment in refrigeration, aislamiento, seguridad, software, monitoring and quality systems. Acquiring a facility that already has relevant pharmaceutical infrastructure and an experienced workforce may shorten the path to operational use.
Location is another important factor.
Carey provides access to Midwest road networks and places Prasco near manufacturers, CDMO, health systems and national distribution channels. Shorter or more predictable transport connections can reduce dwell time and support faster replenishment.
The operational value will still depend on lane qualification. Proximity alone does not establish cold-chain compliance. Each product route must account for vehicle condition, embalaje, temperaturas estacionales, delivery schedules and the receiving capability of the destination.
Impacto B2B
For pharmaceutical manufacturers and brand partners, the acquisition creates additional capacity for products requiring specialized storage and distribution.
Before assigning a product to Carey, manufacturers should confirm the site’s qualified temperature range, monitoring architecture, security level, backup systems and deviation procedures. These requirements should be documented in a quality or technical agreement.
The agreement should also define who reviews temperature alarms, who may authorize product movement and who makes the final release decision after a suspected excursion.
Para CDMO, the facility may provide another downstream connection between manufacturing and commercial distribution. Batch identity, release status and shipping documentation should transfer electronically or through a controlled data process so that the distribution center does not need to reconstruct records manually.
For pharmaceutical 3PLs and carriers, the second campus may create new inbound and outbound transportation lanes. Vehicles and passive or active packaging systems should be qualified for the relevant product profiles rather than selected only by distance or freight price.
A refrigerated vehicle’s air-temperature record should not automatically be treated as the product-temperature record. High-risk products may require independent data loggers placed within representative shipment locations.
Para proveedores de embalajes de cadena de frío, Prasco’s expansion may create demand for validated parcel shippers, sistemas de paletas, materiales de cambio de fase, reusable containers and controlled-room-temperature packaging.
Packout selection should account for actual routes from Carey, including expected delivery time, perfiles ambientales de verano e invierno, weekend exposure and possible consignee delays.
Para proveedores de software y monitoreo, the strongest opportunity is to connect temperature, inventario, security and shipment records.
A quality team should be able to move from an alarm directly to the affected product lots, storage locations and customer orders. Separate systems that require manual reconciliation increase investigation time and the risk of unnecessary quarantine.
For warehouse-automation suppliers, pharmaceutical operations require stronger verification than ordinary e-commerce fulfillment. Automated equipment should maintain lot control, gestión de caducidad, user permissions and electronic audit trails while supporting controlled manual recovery.
For facility and refrigeration contractors, the expanded site will require ongoing monitoring of chamber performance, sellos de puerta, equipo de refrigeración, alarm systems and backup capability.
Any change to storage layout, atroz, airflow or refrigeration capacity should be assessed for its effect on the site’s qualified temperature profile.
For cybersecurity teams, two connected campuses can improve resilience but also enlarge the digital operating environment. Network access, Integración WMS, remote monitoring and automated equipment should be protected through controlled permissions, backups and tested recovery procedures.
For business-continuity planners, Carey and Mason should be treated as a coordinated network.
Contingency exercises should test whether orders can actually be redirected, inventory records can be recovered and products can be transferred without losing temperature history or chain of custody.
The broader lesson is that pharmaceutical cold-chain resilience increasingly depends on combining thermal control, almacenamiento seguro, automation and operational redundancy.
Prasco’s Carey acquisition adds all four elements to its Ohio distribution platform. The commercial value will be determined by how effectively the company qualifies the new site, connects it with Mason and translates the additional infrastructure into reliable product access for its pharmaceutical partners and patients.
