U.S. Agencies Flag Cold-Chain Controls as an Active Cybersecurity Target
Cold-chain cybersecurity has moved beyond an IT concern and into day-to-day operational risk. In a joint November 5 advisory, U.S. agencies said malicious actors are targeting industrial refrigeration and cold-chain monitoring systems globally, including equipment used in food, healthcare, transport and cold-storage operations. Vulnerable controllers can be manipulated to alter temperature settings, trigger heating or defrost cycles, and disrupt temperature visibility. ic3.gov

For operators, the priority is clear: remove controllers from public internet exposure, separate operational-technology networks from business systems, replace default passwords, patch aging firmware, and set safe temperature limits with deviation alerts. Cold-chain resilience now requires cybersecurity controls alongside backup power, validated equipment and temperature monitoring.
