A small expanded polypropylene, or EPP, box should be selected as a finished container with evidence for its intended load and use. The material name does not determine cooling duration, permitted coolant or reuse count. Check usable space and closure with product, coolant and separators together.
Identify the exact finished box
Record model, dimensions, wall construction, lid fit, inserts and outer protection. EPP and expanded polystyrene, or EPS, are different materials. Confirm the supplier’s specification rather than treating all molded foam containers as interchangeable.
ARPRO: EPP thermal food-container materials describes ARPRO’s EPP thermal-container materials. It is a manufacturer-specific material reference, not approval of every EPP box or evidence that Tempk supplies that brand. Obtain finished-container information for the model being considered.
Check the small load in usable space
| Fit question | What to check |
|---|---|
| Primary package | Actual dimensions and orientation, including closures. |
| Coolant | Required supported quantity and placement. |
| Separators | Their thickness and position under the specified load. |
| Lid | Full closure without excessive compression. |
| Empty space | How restraint and layout are maintained. |
| Handling | Whether the loaded container needs outer protection. |
External dimensions are not internal capacity. A small box that fits the product alone may not fit a supported coolant layout. Do not force the lid down or delete a separator to make an order fit.
Establish thermal and coolant suitability
Use product-specific limits, preparation and exposure. Compare evidence for the exact loaded container, and assess relevant minimum and maximum payloads. Record closure behavior and physical condition alongside the temperature trace.
Do not assume EPP automatically permits dry ice. Material-grade information or a general hot-and-cold application description does not establish the finished assembly’s compatibility at solid-CO₂ exposure. Obtain specific permission and a suitable gas-release design where needed.

Check route riskPlan reuse as an operating process
- Identify returned boxes and their condition.
- Follow permitted cleaning and drying instructions.
- Inspect lid fit, walls and relevant inserts.
- Segregate uncertain or damaged units.
- Use supplier-permitted replacement components.
- Review changes affecting the supported configuration.
Do not promise hundreds of cycles without product evidence and retirement criteria. Cleaning, inspection, recovery and preparation capacity belong in the operating cost comparison.
Local collection and recycling conditions also matter. A material description alone does not show the environmental result of your delivery and return system.
Frequently asked questions
Does every EPP box have the same hold time?
No. Assess the complete construction, load, preparation and exposure.
Can an EPP food box automatically take dry ice?
No. Confirm the manufacturer’s permitted use for the exact model and assembly.
Is a small box always more efficient?
Evaluate product fit, protection and the actual shipping configuration rather than size alone.
