Dry Ice Containers and Pack Sheets: Avoid Component Substitution

A dry-ice container and a pack sheet are not interchangeable cooling components. The container provides a physical and thermal boundary; a sheet may be a coolant, separator or another material. Identify each item’s actual composition and role before substituting it into a shipping arrangement.

Map every component to a defined function

ComponentWhat to identify
Insulated containerModel, construction, closure and permitted dry-ice use.
Solid CO₂Form, loading mass and gas-release requirements.
Hydratable sheetActual material, activation and conditioning instructions.
Sealed cold packFormulation, preparation and enclosure specification.
Separator sheetMaterial, dimensions and the role covered by the loading drawing.

The term “dry ice sheet” does not establish that a sheet contains solid carbon dioxide. A gel or water-activated product cannot inherit CO₂ behavior from its marketing name.

Keep preparation instructions attached to identity

Record whether a component needs activation, conditioning or inspection before use. Use the exact supplier instructions. Do not soak a sealed prefilled pack or cut a filled sheet unless the specific product permits it.

A component that fits the same space can still differ in formulation, thermal behavior or mechanical condition. Similar dimensions are not evidence of a qualified substitution.

Assess a proposed substitution as a system change

  • Compare actual composition and preparation.
  • Check fit, movement and separator clearance.
  • Confirm product compatibility and lower-temperature risk.
  • Review closure and gas release where solid CO₂ is present.
  • Assess whether the supporting temperature evidence still applies.
  • Document any revised loading and acceptance requirements.

Do not combine an old container report with a new coolant’s separate marketing claim and call the resulting system proven. Evaluate the complete revised arrangement.

Prevent mistakes in receiving and packing stock

Use clear component codes and preparation status. Separate returned, unprepared and accepted stock where they could be confused. Keep suppliers’ material changes visible to the person responsible for the shipping instruction.

Estimate sizing

For solid-CO₂ packages within the applicable US aircraft or water scope, 49 CFR 173.217: carbon dioxide, solid requires gas-release packaging. A new liner or sheet must not obstruct that feature.

If component identity is uncertain, resolve it before dispatch rather than improvising preparation on the packing line.

Frequently asked questions

Does every pack sheet need hydration?

No. Identify the exact product and permitted preparation method.

Can I replace solid dry ice with a reusable sheet directly?

No. It creates a different system that needs product suitability and performance assessment.

Is the coldest coolant the safest replacement?

No. The product’s permitted temperature range includes protection from excessive cooling.

Use terminology before quantities
