A freezer blanket or thermal pallet cover can reduce heat transfer during food handling and transport. It does not actively refrigerate the load or guarantee a frozen temperature. Its value depends on the cover design, how it is fitted, the product’s starting condition, exposure and the wider temperature-control system.
Clarify what “freezer blanket” means
The term may describe an insulating cover, a pallet shroud or a coolant-containing blanket. These are different products. Ask whether the proposed item supplies cooling capacity or only insulation, and obtain its construction, fit and intended-use information.
A passive insulating cover slows heat transfer. It cannot recover a warm load to a required storage temperature by itself. A reflective surface, foam layer or other material also does not establish a particular hold time without a relevant test.
Where a thermal cover may help
| Exposure | Potential role | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Loading dock dwell | Reduce heat gain during a defined transfer | Uncontrolled dwell may exceed the tested protection period. |
| Transfer between controlled areas | Add a barrier around a conditioned load | Open edges and poor fit can weaken performance. |
| Transport with refrigeration | Reduce some exposure during handling | The cover does not replace the transport temperature system. |
| Passive pallet shipment | Form part of a studied packaging configuration | The full load, coolant and route require assessment. |
For frozen and chilled food, use the actual product specification and applicable food handling requirements. Do not assign every product the same temperature range. Delicate chilled produce and frozen products can have very different limits.
Evaluate fit and the complete load
- Record pallet dimensions, stack height and the product arrangement.
- Check coverage of the top, sides and lower edges, including closures.
- Define the starting temperature and the exposure window.
- Assess whether the cover changes airflow required by the refrigerated system.
- Measure temperatures at representative locations rather than just on the cover surface.
If a cover is tested with one pallet layout, do not transfer the result automatically to a different size, loading pattern or route. Use a baseline comparison where appropriate: the same load and exposure with and without the cover.
Ask for performance evidence
Request the test configuration, ambient exposure, duration, temperature sensors and acceptance criteria. “Keeps food frozen” is too broad when none of those details are supplied. For a reusable cover, also request inspection, cleaning and retirement instructions.
Do not infer food-contact suitability from insulation performance. Check intended contact conditions separately. Likewise, recyclability, reusability and environmental benefit require material and use-specific evidence; they are not automatic properties of a thermal cover.

Precondition the food in the appropriate controlled environment, fit the cover as specified and limit uncontrolled dwell. Define who monitors the load and what happens if the exposure exceeds the agreed window. Keep photographs or diagrams of the accepted fitted configuration for repeatable loading.
Where shipping-container qualification is relevant, WHO: qualification of shipping containers provides a framework for defining and evaluating a system. It does not establish that any particular food blanket or Tempk product has passed a test.
Frequently asked questions
Can a freezer blanket replace a refrigerated truck?
Only a separately assessed system could support that transport decision. An insulating cover alone does not supply refrigeration.
Will any reflective blanket keep food frozen?
No. Performance depends on the construction, fit, load and exposure, and must be demonstrated for the intended conditions.
Can I reuse the cover?
Follow the supplier’s instructions and inspect for damage or contamination. Reuse suitability and cleaning requirements depend on the materials and use.
