Before a dry-ice container is used, check that the assembly is intact and matches the supported configuration. Inspect closure, insulation, outer protection and any specified separators together. An acceptable empty-container appearance does not establish thermal performance, permitted reuse or carrier acceptance.
Identify the supported assembly
Record container model, liner, lid, inserts, separators and any required outer package. Confirm dry-ice permission and the loading instruction. Keep reusable container components distinct from solid CO₂, which remains a consumable.
A “dry ice pack” product name may describe another coolant. Establish actual material identity before applying a container’s solid-CO₂ instructions or transport classification.
Inspect the relevant failure points
| Part | What to check under its instructions |
|---|---|
| Walls and liner | Cracks, damage or incompatible repairs. |
| Lid and closure | The intended loaded fit can be maintained. |
| Gas release | No added film, tape or component obstructs the supported path. |
| Separators | Correct identity, condition and placement. |
| Outer protection | Suitable condition for the actual transport process. |
| Reusable components | Permitted cleaning, inspection and readiness status. |
Inspection criteria should come from the exact design and operating procedure. Do not declare a universal acceptable crack size or patch method for all containers.
Control repairs and substitutions
- Keep uncertain assemblies out of accepted stock.
- Identify damaged or missing components.
- Use supplier-permitted replacement parts.
- Assess changes affecting thermal or physical behavior.
- Retain the decision and actual configuration.
- Update operator instructions where the accepted arrangement changes.
A liner of the same thickness or a different lid of similar dimensions is not automatically equivalent. Do not claim the original qualification applies after an unassessed repair or substitution.
Check the loaded state before release
Confirm product and coolant fit without forced closure. Record the specified mass and layout, and inspect relevant primary-package and restraint conditions. Review discrepancies before dispatch rather than hiding them with extra tape.

If the system is reusable, maintain an inspection and retirement process based on its actual instructions. Do not promise unlimited cycles or environmentally superior reuse without a defined operating basis.
Frequently asked questions
Can I repair every damaged shipper with tape?
No. Use the permitted repair or replacement process and assess any affected design.
Does a clean container mean it is ready?
Check component condition, configuration and applicable preparation as well.
Can a different lid preserve the original thermal claim?
Only where the supporting evidence and permitted variation cover it.
