Long-Lasting Dry Ice Packs: Compare the Evidence Behind the Claim

“Long-lasting” is a comparison claim that needs defined conditions. Identify whether the product is solid CO₂ or another coolant, then compare complete packouts using the same product limits and exposure. A colder material or larger starting quantity does not establish a longer useful shipping duration.

Ask what the claim actually measures

A duration may describe remaining coolant, container air temperature or product temperature. Ask which endpoint the supplier used. For a shipping decision, the important endpoint is whether the product remains within its specified range throughout the intended exposure.

Also establish whether the advertised “dry ice pack” contains solid CO₂. A water, gel or phase-change pack sold under a similar name cannot inherit CO₂ properties or a different product’s test result.

Build a fair comparison sheet

EvidenceQuestion to ask
PayloadDoes the test represent my dimensions, mass and starting condition?
Temperature limitsWere both warming and overcooling assessed?
PreparationCan our operation reproduce the coolant and container preparation?
ExposureDoes the test cover the intended route, season and delays?
SensorsWere measurements made at justified product locations?
PackageWere the same model, closure, separators and outer components used?

If candidates were tested under different conditions, do not rank them using only the largest hour value. Request comparable evidence or conduct a defined comparative study.

Compare operating fit as well as duration

Record preparation capacity, coolant availability, packed dimensions, handling, carrier acceptance and the receiving procedure. A high-duration configuration can be impractical if the packing line cannot prepare it consistently or the operator does not accept it.

Do not convert the presence of remaining dry ice into a guarantee for every payload size. Any allowed loading variations need supporting evidence and usable packing instructions.

Control changes after selection

  • Keep the accepted component specifications and loading drawing.
  • Define permitted payload and route variations.
  • Record substitutions in coolant form, container or separators.
  • Review significant changes before relying on the old result.
  • Investigate failed temperature records against the actual packing and route history.

For applicable US aircraft and water shipments, consult 49 CFR 173.217: carbon dioxide, solid for gas-release packaging requirements. A successful duration comparison does not itself approve transport.

Frequently asked questions

Does a colder coolant last longer?

Not necessarily in terms of useful product hold time. Excessive cooling can fail a product’s lower limit.

Can I compare a 48-hour and 72-hour label directly?

Only after confirming the test conditions and endpoints are comparable.

Is reusable coolant always the longer-lasting option?

No. Reuse capability and duration in a specific shipment are separate attributes.

Use evidence to choose the duration

For a specific three-day route, see 72-hour shipping exposure planning. For the meaning of coolant lifespan, see the dry ice pack lifespan guide.
