Select a cold chain pallet shipper for the actual pallet load and freight process. Thermal performance, lifting and outer dimensions must describe the same loaded system. A parcel-box result or a material specification cannot establish that a full pallet remains acceptable through consolidation, transfers and receiving.
Define the full pallet configuration
Record product presentations, permitted conditions, quantities, carton layout and loading height. Identify insulation, coolant, separators, closure and outer protection. Confirm whether the system is passive or uses active temperature control.
State usable internal space, external dimensions and loaded mass. Include any projections, lifting access and closure constraints in the design record. Do not assume nominal pallet dimensions describe the complete shipper.
Check freight interfaces before choosing the system
| Interface | Question to resolve |
|---|---|
| Loading | Can the agreed load fit without obstructing closure or required clearance? |
| Lifting | Are the pallet and lifting arrangements suitable for the actual loaded system? |
| Vehicle or aircraft | Can the selected route accept dimensions, mass and handling needs? |
| Transfer facility | Are relevant storage and handling conditions available? |
| Receiving | Can staff unload and move the product into suitable storage? |
| Return | How are reusable components recovered and checked? |
Agree these conditions with the actual providers. A container’s nominal capacity does not confirm aircraft fit, stacking permission or availability of suitable intermediate storage.
Assess temperature across the loaded pallet
- Use relevant load patterns and product starting conditions.
- Identify justified warm, cold and contact-risk locations.
- Include the full route exposure and credible waiting.
- Record coolant identity, preparation and loading.
- Assess relevant physical handling and component movement.
- Evaluate the complete data against defined product criteria.
One sensor near a central carton may not describe the entire load. Select measurement locations through the appropriate risk assessment and protocol. Do not average away a failed location.
Make dispatch and changes reproducible
Provide a loading drawing and instructions for assembly, closure, restraint and release. Record the exact configuration used. Review altered loading height, carton distribution, coolant or handling against the accepted evidence.
Helpful decision tools
Check the details before you choose packaging
These quick tools can help you compare route risk, sizing needs, coolant choices, and packaging details before you request a quote.
Ice Pack Calculator
Estimate gel ice pack quantity for chilled shipments and practical route planning.
Estimate ice packsDry Ice Calculator
Estimate dry ice needs for frozen or ultra-cold shipments before packing.
Estimate dry iceCoolant & PCM Reference
Compare coolant and PCM options when a route needs added temperature support.
Compare optionsWHO: qualification of shipping containers provides a pharmaceutical shipping-container qualification framework. Use the applicable process for the product and pallet system; it does not certify any particular supplier’s shipper.
If dry ice is used, confirm compatibility, gas release and carrier acceptance separately. A freight booking and a successful temperature study answer different questions.
Frequently asked questions
Can I scale up a parcel-box trial by multiplying the coolant?
Do not assume linear scaling. Assess the actual pallet configuration.
Does a thermal cover make a pallet equivalent to a complete shipper?
No. Establish each component’s role and the evidence for the whole system.
Can a heavier load use the same handling instruction?
Check the supported load and freight interfaces before expanding use.
